Gas

Hydro Tasmania stopped operating its only gas-fired power station at Bell Bay in April 2009. The Bell Bay Power Station is due for demolition.

Previously it had provided supplementary generation for the Tasmanian hydropower system during times of low rainfall.

Originally built in 1971 as an oil-fired generator following the devastating 1967 drought, it was converted to gas in 2003 with the arrival of natural gas in Tasmania through the pipeline from Victoria through Bass Strait.

Bell Bay Power Station is located on the banks of the Tamar River in northern Tasmania.

The Bell Bay Power Station facility consists of two 120MW gas-fired generators.
